Chilika Lake is an internationally designated Ramsar wetland and Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, covering over 1,100 square kilometers across coastal Odisha. This 3-day itinerary pairs the spiritual majesty of Jagannath Puri with the pristine, calm waters of Satapada on Chilika Lake.
Board a licensed tourist motorboat at Satapada jetty to cruise into open water channels where endangered Irrawaddy dolphins swim and surface. Journey further across the lagoon to the natural sandbar of Rajhans Island and the dramatic Sea Mouth, where the tranquil lagoon waters flow into the rolling surf of the Bay of Bengal.
Day-Wise Detailed Itinerary
Travel Distances: Puri to Satapada (Chilika) is ~50 km (approx. 1 hour 20 minutes scenic drive via Brahmagiri).

Day 1: Arrival in Puri, Beach Check-in & Evening Temple Aarti
Meet your private chauffeur upon arrival at Puri Railway Station (PURI) or Bhubaneswar BBI Airport. Drive to your beachside hotel in Puri and check in.
- Relax and unwind by the Bay of Bengal coastline; explore Puri’s clean Blue Flag Golden Beach promenade.
- Late afternoon or evening visit to Shree Jagannath Temple. Our local coordinator assists with footwear cloaking, mobile phone lockers, and orientation through the temple outer courtyard.
- Attend the enchanting Sandhya Alati (evening lamp ritual) and experience the devotional fervor around Grand Road.
- Overnight stay in Puri.

Day 2: Full-Day Excursion to Satapada (Chilika Lake) & Dolphin Safari
Post breakfast, embark on a scenic 50 km morning drive southward through Casuarina groves and rural village roads to Satapada on the eastern shore of Chilika Lake.
- Board an OTDC-approved motorized boat equipped with mandatory life jackets for an exhilarating 2 to 3-hour lagoon expedition.
- Cruise to the designated Dolphin Viewpoint channel to observe playful Irrawaddy dolphins surfacing in their natural marine habitat.
- Navigate onward to Rajhans Island and the stunning Sea Mouth sandbank where the brackish waters meet the Bay of Bengal waves. Spot red ghost crabs burrowing into the white sands.
- Visit local island huts offering fresh cooked coastal seafood or vegetarian snacks.
- Drive back to Puri in the late afternoon. Evening free for shopping on Swargadwar Beach. Overnight stay in Puri.

Day 3: Brahmagiri Alarnath Temple & Departure Transfer
After breakfast, check out from the hotel and commence your return transfer.
- Stop at the historic Alarnath Temple in Brahmagiri (approx. 20 km from Puri). Lord Alarnath is revered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu; during the 15-day Anavasara period preceding Rath Yatra when Jagannath Temple is closed for quarantine rituals, lakhs of pilgrims worship here.
- Savor the famous temple prasadam — divine sweetened condensed milk Kheer, prepared traditionally for centuries.
- Transfer to Puri Railway Station or Bhubaneswar Airport / Station for your homeward journey.
Chilika Lake Boating & Environmental Guidelines:
• Dolphin Spotting Expectations: Irrawaddy dolphins are wild marine animals. While sightings at Satapada are frequent (especially during calm morning hours), 100% guarantee cannot be made due to natural wildlife movements.
• Safety Protocol: Life jackets are compulsory for every passenger boarding tourist boats per Odisha State Tourism Department regulations.
• Seasonal Advisory: Boating operates year-round, but is most comfortable from October to March. In rare instances of severe coastal storm warnings or high winds, boat services may be temporarily suspended by local district authorities for traveler safety.
• Eco-Sensitive Zone: Plastic littering inside Chilika lagoon is strictly prohibited.

The standard round-trip motorboat cruise from Satapada jetty to the Dolphin Point, Rajhans Island, and Sea Mouth takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
Can we add Konark Sun Temple to this 3-day trip?
Yes. If your departure flight/train is in the late evening on Day 3, we can easily add the Konark Sun Temple visit along the Marine Drive on Day 3 morning before dropping you at Bhubaneswar.
What is the difference between Satapada and Mangalajodi?
Satapada (near Puri) is famous for open brackish waters, Irrawaddy dolphins, and the Sea Mouth. Mangalajodi (on the northern edge of Chilika) is freshwater marshland famous for millions of migratory winter birds (November to February). We can customize either or both in a 4 to 5-day itinerary.
